Curiouser and Curiouser?
Can mentoring help me do six impossible things before breakfast?
(Or at least hand in my assignment answer that email, and remember to eat & relax.)
1. What is Autism Specialist Mentoring?
A collaborative, one-to-one support service for neurodivergent students — designed to reduce stress, develop strategies, and build confidence in academic and everyday life.
2. What does mentoring cover?
Mentoring is highly individual. Common areas include:
Organization and planning
Managing communication with university staff
Navigating change and transitions
Building routines
Reducing overwhelm
Developing sustainable strategies
Exploring placements, employment or postgraduate options
Increasing self-advocacy, self-esteem, and confidence
3. What doesn’t mentoring cover?
It’s not counselling or therapy, nor is it a study skills or subject-specific tutoring service. However, where relevant, mentoring may include signposting to additional support.
4. How do I start mentoring through DSA?
Once your DSA 2 letter confirms mentoring support, you (or your assessor) can contact the provider. We'll arrange an informal initial meeting to discuss your preferences, strengths and priorities.
5. What if I miss a session?
Life happens — just let me know, even if it’s last minute.
If two or more sessions are missed without notice, support may be paused while we check in and agree next steps.
6. How often are sessions?
Your needs assessor will usually suggest a weekly number of sessions. This can be reviewed together to suit what’s useful for you.
7. Is it confidential?
Yes, mentoring sessions are confidential. The only exception is if there’s a safeguarding concern or serious risk to you or others.
8. What if I need urgent support between sessions?
Mentoring isn’t a crisis service. If you're in distress, please contact your university wellbeing team, GP, NHS 111, or Samaritans on 116 123.
9. Do I need a diagnosis to access mentoring?
For DSA-funded mentoring, medical evidence or a diagnostic report is usually required. If you're seeking private mentoring, this isn’t necessary.
10. Is mentoring available on a private basis?
Yes. Private mentoring is available for students not eligible for DSA, for support during university breaks, or after graduation.
